May - Line from a story - Andrea Radley

Last week I totally enjoyed a week long oil painting workshop at South West Institute of TAFE with Graeme Ultmann as instructor. This is the first time I have painted in oils and I am not normally a landscape painter so it posed a lot of challenges for me, but I learnt a lot and had lots of fun. I chose this painting that I did at the start of the workshop for this months theme. It is my husband, Ken taking our daughter out for a row in his clinker boat for the first time on the Hopkins River.

In the first chapter of the book "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame, the Rat has just invited the Mole to go for a trip in a boat.
"This has been a wonderful day!" said he, as the Rat shoved off and took to the sculls again. "Do you know, I've never been in a boat before in all my life."
"What?" cried the Rat, open-mouthed: "Never been in a - you never- well I - what have you been doing, then?"
"Is it so nice as all that?" asked the Mole shyly, though he was quite prepared to believe it as he leant back in his seat and surveyed the cushions, the oars, the row locks, and all the fascinating fittings, and felt the boat sway lightly forward for his stroke. "Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING - absolute nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing," he went on dreamily: "messing - about - in - boats; messing --."

This months theme was tricky for photography. The best idea I had was to take photos at a consent. These photos are of two bands.

Title: Time on my hands

The guitar portrait - Photos of a workshop were taken to convey the relationship between my mechanical background and the marriage of music with my labour history. A portrait photo of my bass guitar was then superimposed over with a casual portrait of myself. All photos were taken by myself except for the portrait of myself which was kindly taken for me by Daniel, a fellow student in my course.

Portrait - Carolyn Reed

This photo was taken after a trip to the Port Fairy Folk Festival. The little boy was so happy with his face painted as spider man as you can see with this ear to ear smile. I think this is a nice portrait because your eyes go straight to his face because of the bright red face and white eyes. Then your eyes also get taken around the rest of the photo because of the green on the t-shirt and the plant behind him.

Portrait - Chisako Ishikawa

The first portrait appears much better than the original photo. I have manipulated tools to show her face clearly. Her face is in the right position in the frame and I brought brightness, contrast and colour to make her face clearly focused and natural.
With the second portrait the original of her face was not in focus. The background that was in focus I blurred and I experimented with filters to lesson a dark shadow that was across her face.

Beginnings -Sam Clarke

The idea that the photo is meant to show is that I am standing over a long road, getting ready to walk it. I thought that some people might not be able to gain that thought from looking at the picture. So I added text, which I lined up with the pole that I am standing on, for extra effect.

Beginnings - Matthew King

The idea came from the perspective shown by railway lines slowly coming together in the distance. By the end that idea almost was scrapped when I was able to shoe that I could make a look of an artificial beginning by making the character within the picture (myself) look like a 'cutout' this helped to show the emphasis on a start of a journey. Almost as myself diving into Multimedia as I actually am.

Well with the theme "beginnings" the first thing that came to my head was the beginning of time though at first I didn't know what I was going to do for it. The idea of having zero's on all the numbers to represent time starting just sort of popped into my head and it worked.

Beginnings - Carolyn Reed

This is one of my more simple ideas for the theme ‘Beginnings’. I thought it would be good to take a photo of a rose that hasn’t opened and is still a blob form. The rose is in its ugly stage before it opens into an amazing flower.
