March - Fairy Tale - Nathan Pye

tanuki

This month's entry from me is my interpretation of the Japanese fairy tale 'Bunbuku Chagama'.
From Wikipedia:

Bunbuku Chagama roughly translates to "happiness bubbling over like a tea pot." The story tells of a poor man who finds a tanuki caught in a trap. Feeling sorry for the animal, he sets it free. That night, the tanuki comes to the poor man's house to thank him for his kindness. The tanuki transforms itself into a chagama and tells the man to sell him for money.

The man sells the tanuki-teapot to a monk, who takes it home and, after scrubbing it harshly, sets it over the fire to boil water. Unable to stand the heat, the tanuki teapot sprouts legs and, in its half-transformed state, makes a run for it.

The tanuki returns to the poor man with another idea. The man would set up a 'roadside attraction' (a little circus-like setup) and charge admission for people to see a teapot walking a tightrope. The plan works, and each gains something good from the other--the man is no longer poor and the tanuki has a new friend and home.

In a variant of the story, the tanuki-teapot does not run and returns to its transformed state. The shocked monk decides to leave the teapot as an offering to the poor temple where he lives, choosing not to use it for making tea again. The temple eventually becomes famous for its supposed dancing teapot.

Dancing teapot. Makes me laugh.

March - Fairy tales - Tracey Head

Well is this Prince charming, maybe. A well known fairy tale where we get to kiss the frog and see if he is really a prince. As mentioned by others many tales seem wonderful and full of promises only to realise it is the journey and not the destination that is important, (deep hey). Ive kissed a few frogs in my time and still believe in the magik of life and its treasures it does hold here in reality. I feel it is important to have the wishful playful part of ourselves called the inner child still following the imagination to creativity, freedom and colour.

March - Fairytales - Andrea Radley

Rabbits and especially white rabbits appear symbolically a lot in Fairytales and art. They are often used as a symbol ot fertiltiy or rebirth and of playful sexuality, which also relates to the human perception of innocence, as well as its reputation as a prolific breeder.
Rabbits can be seen as defenceless creatures as they are a prey animal and can represent timidity especially in sport.
My piece is a picture of my daugther with her rabbit, which she wanted as a pet because it looked like such a fluffly cuddly creature. It turns out it doesnt like cuddles and has got long nails which leave quiet substantial painful scratches.

March - Fairytales - D Waterfield

Fairy Tails.

Not many people know that there is a paradox at play within the common concept of ‘Fairy Tales’ because the true origin is actually a myth within a myth.

Once upon a time there was a myth that had evolved about little people who became known as fairys’. ( an equally unauthenticated version of the myth actually held that their point of origin was from within a Port not far from here ).

Even more deeply embedded within the original myth is the hazy legend of the local leprechauns, imported along with the Irish Koroit convicts, who in fact themselves invented the original myth of the fairy, simply to create a creature smaller than themselves, thereby going up a notch in the self-esteem stakes. But, the plot thickens..........................
These (Leprechaun) fairies in reality all had tails: of all shapes, sizes and function. These tails were absolutely integral to the persona of the fairy, and a whole status and class system had evolved accordingly within the fairy social-system.

But, of course, with the Irish accent speech-impediment, and the distorting passage of time, the ‘Tails’ became ‘Tales’ and the true myth became entwined, and then apparently lost.

All is not lost however, because archaeologists have in fact recently uncovered ( see above ) a carbon-dated document which proves indisputably that Fairies did begin their journey with tails and not tales.

Fairies in the Garden – Fairy Tales - March – By Stacey Knowles

I loved the Fairies in the Garden aspect and if you only looked hard enough and truly believed i found that more mystical and enjoyable than a tail such as “James and the giant Peach” .
I still collect small ornaments on fairies, and no matter how small, will always have a garden.
It’s strange the things you take away from your childhood without even thinking...

This photo to do was more pleasurable then re-creating and older tail.

Kalidah-March-fairy tales-Rowan

The kalidahs were half-tiger, half bear creatures that lived in the forest In the Oz series. While they did not appear in the movie, they were referenced in the line "lions and tigers and bears, oh my!"
I was try to go as scary as possible, did it work?
