February - Change - Fiona Howland

The concept of obvious colour change in the Chameleon's skin came into play when i made this whimsical teapot. My idea of a 'being' doing a 180 degree change comes from my own painful dealings of life earlier in 2006. The Chameleon is an enjoyable 'element' to play with and use for my work whatever the medium! "Huey" reminds me frequently of the uncanny ability for him to change colours for his benefit. Huey is a play on the word Hue, meaning colour! Huey belongs to the beginning of a series of works to come in the future. It represents the ability for any organism to change in response to the environment in which it lives.

CHANGE - February - D Waterfield

This is my late rendition for the February Cuttlefish catalogue. Why is it late? Because it’s been going round my head for the last few weeks trying to get out.

I thought I’d attempt to convey a symbolic representation, of change as part of human behaviour. To me change is part of the evolution of human potential and it is therefore finite; and as such can be both anticipated and encapsulated symbolically.

So I had this visual picture of a symbol that I wanted to convey graphically. But: At this stage of my evolution, in graphic design, my computer skills are best described as embryonic.
The particular change that I am seeking, is to develop those skills so that I can express my ideas graphically without this hindrance. My change will be fueled by determination born of both desire for success and fear of failure.

So, after spending fruitless hours with illustrator and photoshop, at war with the pen tool, trying to draw my symbolic spirals, I decided to face reality. In an attempt to seek redemption I am now, at bloody 4.30 in the morning, drawing squirley lines on a whiteboard to attempt to convey to you my graphic rendition of ‘change’.
I hope those of you who share an interest in the subliminal (is there anybody out there?) will find it of some interest, whilst for the remainder of you who don’t, then I shall attempt to gratify your indulgence with a few stolen philosophical quotes from Mr Google.

Re-starting - February - S Knowles

An olden day building, with a new twist in the modern day.
This brings change I see as you have someone outside the window, not looking out of it but being out there, like she’s ready to take on the world after being blended in to the point where everything around her is colour where as she remains in black and white.
I feel like for her, this is change, outside rather than in looking out. Gives me the feeling that she’s ready to re-start.

February - Change - Phoebe Adams

From the time it’s parents deposit and fertilise their eggs in a still pool of water, the tiny embryos of the green tree frog are on their own and left to fend for themselves. At first they feed from the yolk in their soft membranous eggs. When this food source is depleted they hatch from their eggs and graze and scavenge in the water their mothers abandoned them in. As tadpoles their health and safety is dependant on the water they live in. If they survive they eventually they grow limbs and lungs and crawl out of their pool as juvenile frogs. Finally they grow into adult tree frogs and start the cycle again. This is just another example of the incredible change all living things must undergo to be part of the never ending cycle of birth, growth and death.

Welcome to Cuttlefish and for some welcome back!
February's theme is "Change"
We chose this theme as change is on our minds at the moment as all our courses in the Department of Arts are changing and Media and Design are changing offices and studio rooms during the year.

For the theme it could be what is changing for you, changes in the world, or maybe what you think should change...
The work can be any medium, video, photo, sculpture, tapestry, painting, drawing, pottery etc. Along with the work we need information on:
  • Size of work
  • Materials used
  • And a blurb about the work itself
  • Artists name
  • The date is was created Course enrolled in
Have fun!
